In plain words
- You do not need an account, and we do not ask your name to read anything.
- We show no adverts and use no tracking or analytics tools.
- Quiz scores, badges and settings stay on your own device. We never see them.
- If you give us your email for the newsletter, we use it only to send the newsletter, and you can leave any time.
- A few helpers from other companies (YouTube, Google Fonts, Google Translate) load when you use certain features. They are listed below.
1. Who we are
Today's Punjab is a free, non-political website about Sikh and Punjabi history, people, faith and community, based in British Columbia, Canada. This policy explains what information the website handles and why. We follow Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
2. Information we collect
We collect personal information only when you choose to give it to us:
- Newsletter. If you sign up, we receive your email address. We use it only to send you the Today's Punjab newsletter. Every newsletter has a way to unsubscribe, and you can ask us to delete your address at any time.
- Suggest an entry. If you suggest a person, place or project, we receive what you type into the form, including a name or credit line if you add one. We use it only to review and possibly publish your suggestion. Please do not include private details about other people.
Both forms are delivered to our inbox by a service called Web3Forms. We do not sell, rent or trade anyone's information, and we never will.
Like every website, our hosting provider, Cloudflare, automatically processes basic technical information such as your IP address and browser type so it can deliver pages and protect the site from attacks. We do not use this information to identify you.
3. Information that stays on your device
Some features remember things using your browser's own storage. This information is saved only on your device, is never sent to us, and you can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data:
- quiz scores, badges and progress in Punjab Learns, the Kids Hub, the detective game and Who Am I?
- whether the background music is on, its volume and where it was playing
- your language choice (English or ਪੰਜਾਬੀ)
- a copy of any suggestion you send us
We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
4. Other services we use
A few features rely on outside services. When you use them, your browser connects to that company directly, which means it can see your IP address. Each company has its own privacy policy.
- YouTube (Google) plays the background music and the videos. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, which limits the cookies YouTube stores. You can pause the music at any time with the player in the bottom corner.
- Google Fonts supplies the lettering used on the site.
- Google Translate is used only when you press the ਪੰਜਾਬੀ button. The English text of the page is sent to Google to be translated.
- Google text-to-speech is used in the Kids Hub when you press a button to hear a Punjabi letter or word. Only that letter or word is sent.
- Web3Forms delivers newsletter sign-ups and suggestions to our inbox.
- Cloudflare hosts the website and protects it.
Photographs on this site come from Wikimedia Commons and are stored on our own server, so viewing them does not contact anyone else.
5. Children
Many visitors to Today's Punjab are young people, and parts of the site, like the Kids Hub, are made especially for them. Children can use every learning feature without giving us any personal information at all.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Children under 13 should ask a parent or guardian before signing up for the newsletter or sending a suggestion. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
6. Your rights
You can ask us at any time to show you, correct or delete any personal information we hold about you, or to take you off the newsletter. We will reply within 30 days. We keep newsletter addresses only while you are subscribed, and suggestions only as long as we need them to review and credit your entry.
If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
7. Keeping information safe
The site is served only over a secure, encrypted connection (HTTPS). Form submissions are encrypted on the way to us. We limit who can read our inbox, and we collect as little as possible in the first place.
8. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. If the change is important, we will also mention it in the newsletter.
